How to Wash Your Bra Properly — The Complete Guide

By Bras By MaMloo June 2026 6 min read Bra Care
Most women are washing their bras wrong — and it's costing them hundreds of rands a year in bras that wear out too fast. Here's everything you need to know, from how often to wash to the correct way to dry.

How often should you wash your bra?

Quick Answer

Wash your bra every 2–3 wears under normal conditions. After exercise or in South Africa's summer heat, every 1–2 wears.

Every time you wear your bra, it absorbs sweat, natural body oils, deodorant and body lotion. These break down the elastic fibres and fabric over time. Regular washing keeps the bra hygienic and prevents premature aging of the materials.

The common mistake is either washing too rarely (bacteria and oils degrade the fabric) or too frequently (overwashing stresses the fibres). 2–3 wears is the sweet spot for most bras in most conditions.

SA-Specific Tip

In Durban, Johannesburg and other humid or warm regions, consider washing after every 1–2 wears during summer months (October–March). Sweat is your bra's biggest enemy.

Can you put bras in the washing machine?

Quick Answer

Yes — but only inside a mesh wash bag, on a delicate or hand-wash cycle at 30°C or cooler, with a slow spin. Never put a bra directly in the drum.

Machine washing without a bag is one of the fastest ways to ruin a bra. The underwire bends, hooks snag other garments, and the agitation distorts the cup shape. A mesh lingerie bag solves all of this — the bra is protected inside the bag while the water and detergent still clean it properly.

Never Do This

Never machine wash bras with jeans, towels or anything with zips — even in a bag. The weight and friction damages the fabric. Wash bras separately or with other delicates.

How do you hand wash a bra? (The correct method)

Hand washing is the gold standard for bra care — it's gentler on the fabric, extends the life of the bra, and takes less than 5 minutes once you know how.

How do you dry a bra correctly?

Quick Answer

Always air dry — never tumble dry. Hang from the centre gore (the bridge between the cups) or lay flat. Dry in shade, not direct sunlight.

Tumble drying is the single fastest way to destroy a bra. The heat breaks down elastane fibres, melts the underwire casing and permanently distorts the cup shape. After even a few tumble dry cycles, a bra that used to last 12 months will be dead in 3.

Drying Tip

Hang from the centre gore (the small strip of fabric between the two cups at the front) — not from the straps. Hanging from straps stretches them permanently over time.

How should you store bras?

Storage matters more than most people realise — especially for moulded or padded cups.

How long should a bra last?

With proper care, a good quality bra worn 3–5 times a week should last 6–12 months. Signs it needs replacing:

Extend Your Bra's Life

Rotate between 2–3 bras rather than wearing the same one daily. Elastic needs 24–48 hours to recover its shape between wears. This alone can double how long your bras last.

Does detergent matter?

Yes — regular laundry powder is too harsh for bra fabrics. The enzymes break down delicate fibers and the optical brighteners cause white or pastel fabrics to yellow over time. Use a gentle lingerie detergent or a mild soap (like Woolwash). Bras By MaMloo will be stocking a dedicated lingerie wash as part of our care accessories range — launching soon.
